Universal shifts Pacific Rim 2 release date
Guillermo del Toro’s giant robots and kaiju will be returning a little later than originally planned, as Universal Pictures announced a new release date for Pacific Rim 2.
The sequel to the 2013 original film has been pushed from its April 7, 2017 date to Aug. 4, 2017. Pacific Rim 2 will arrive in 3D, and was likely moved out of the way to make room for another Universal franchise hitting theaters in April 2017: the newly announced Fast and Furious 8.
In addition to Pacific Rim 2, Universal also revealed when several other major titles will arrive at the studio’s CinemaCon presentation.
Legendary Pictures’ World of Warcraft adaptation Warcraft, directed by Duncan Jones, has been pushed from its March 11, 2016 date to June 16, 2016. The film will release in the heart of summer movie season, also in 3D.
Meanwhile, Tom Cruise’s latest film, Mena, which is directed by Doug Liman, has been set for Jan. 6, 2017. Universal’s latest take on The Mummy is moving to March 24, 2017 from its previously announced June 24, 2016 release. And finally, a Universal monster franchise movie, currently untitled, will move from its April 21, 2017 date to March 30, 2018.
And Universal also announced the release date of both Fifty Shades sequels, which will arrive over consecutive Februarys in 2017 and 2018.
